Geelong Arts Centre
Little Malop Street Redevelopment, First Nations Co-Design

CASE STUDY

“We realised early on that we absolutely needed to allow space for First Nations stories to be part of the very fabric of the building”

- Geelong Arts Centre

The brief

Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation. Central to the project was the commissioning of four First Nations artists whose work is now embedded in the architecture of the building itself. We were brought on to document this extraordinary process – six films capturing the journey from concept to creation, and the deep cultural significance behind its development.

The redevelopment of Geelong Arts Centre wasn’t just an architectural facelift – it was a visionary co-design project, led in collaboration with the Wadawurrung

Our Approach

Filmed entirely on Wadawurrung Country, the series chronicles the redevelopment of Geelong Arts Centre as a living, evolving space – from initial groundwork through to its final unveiling. The production was shaped by the interviewees themselves: as the artists spoke of texture, form, light and story, we responded visually and captured the materials, patterns and meaning that reflected their words.

At the heart of the series are four artist profiles, spotlighting the permanent installations created by Gerard Black, Mick Ryan Kait James, and Tarryn Love. Each film offers an intimate window into the artist’s creative process, their connection to culture and Country, and their reflections on what contributing to a space of this scale and significance means.

Throughout, our role was to document – not to define. We prioritised a process of listening and learning, recognising that we were just one part of a much larger story. It was a privilege to walk alongside the people and processes shaping this remarkable project, and to create work that honours both the art and the intent behind it.
